Beetle Spray Program
The spraying of trees to protect them from attack by the Mountain Pine Beetle has proven moderately effective in the Crystal Lakes area as one weapon in the fight against the infestation.
As a service to property owners, the Crystal Lakes office makes arrangements with contractors working in the area to establish pricing and acts as a go-between in engaging the services of these contractors. The Beetle Spray Request Form, which becomes available in April and must be submitted to the office by the 15th of May, can be used by property owners to engage and pre-pay for the number of trees they need sprayed to be treated by the contractor of their choice.
The Spray Request Form will be posted here and available in the office as soon as arrangements have been made with all contractors. Please check back.
Seedling Order Program
As the Mountain Pine Beetle infestation sweeps across Crystal Lakes, mature lodgepole and ponderosa pine will be killed. Several actions can mitigate the loss. One of those steps is to immediately start a replacement program by planting trees of different species. Seedlings planted now will be well established when the beetle has finished its destruction. This will help property owners maintain the value of their property and the ambiance that we enjoy. Promoting a diversity of trees will help our forest be less impacted by the next infestation, whether it be Mountain Pine Beetle or another beetle or disease.
The Seedling Order Program is run annually by the Greenbelt Management Committee (GMC) in coordination with the Colorado State Forest Service (CSFS). Ordering seedlings is done through the Crystal Lakes office, and the seedlings are picked up by members of the GMC and delivered to Crystal Lakes the weekend of the Road & Recreation Association Annual Meeting in June.
Every year, the Colorado State Forest Service (CSFS) recommends species that are native to the area and which are found in smaller numbers than the lodgepole. These species have in the past been immune to the Pine Beetle. Ordering for the Seedling Order Program generally begins in January. The number and variety of seedlings available is determined by the CSFS and the capacity of its nurseries. The seedlings come in flats of 30 per species and generally have a top height of 5"-12". The variety of species available drops over time as species are sold out – early orders have the best chance of getting the specific trees desired.
Those participating in the program should be aware that the Water Augmentation Plan that governs use of water from all wells in Crystal Lakes states, "lot owners will have the opportunity to construct wells for household only purposes with no irrigation." This means that water from property owners' wells and the Association wells cannot be used to water seedlings. Property owners will need to bring water up from town or purchase non-potable water from the CLWSA.
An order form will be made available in the office and on this website as soon as arrangements with the CSFS have been completed. Please check back.
